ASSOCIATION OF RADIOLOGISTS IN NIGERIA(ARIN)

Celebrates

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY (IDoR 2019) NOVEMBER 8, 2019

THEME: SPORTS IMAGING

THIS IS A SPECIAL/OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE BY THE

NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF RADIOLOGISTS IN NIGERIA (ARIN) IN COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY (IDoR 2019).

CONCEPT: This perfect moment is to create awareness and celebrate Radiology by sharing the stunning Medical, Scientific and Artistic possibilities of, perhaps, the most exciting and progressive discipline in healthcare. In this light, highlight the essential roles that Radiologists play in countless medical scenarios and on this occasion, in relation to Sports Medicine.

ARIN is the umbrella body for all Radiologists in Nigeria.

Radiologists are MEDICAL DOCTORS who have gone further to specialise in an aspect of Medicine that uses various imaging modalities to make diagnosis of diseases. The post graduate medical doctor who specialises in Radiology is known as a Consultant Radiologist.

The Consultant Radiologist having had sound medical background with comprehensive post graduate training is certified and entrusted with the responsibilities of directing image acquisition, interpretation of the images and making accurate diagnosis in the effective treatment of patients.

In line of his/her work, the Consultant Radiologist has other health workers/professionals that assist in various forms or the other to produce the images.

Some of the health professionals are: Radiographers, Radiology Nurses, Darkroom Technicians, Records staff etc.

November 8 is recognised as the International day of Radiology; the day that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of X-rays in 1895 and more than a century later his discovery has helped to revolutionize medicine and save countless lives.

Sports Imaging has been chosen as the theme of IDoR 2019. This date is to be observed as a day of action and awareness, especially in relation to Sports Imaging, highlighting to the world the essential roles of the Radiologists and allied professionals as a part of the healthcare team.

We also bring to the awareness of the public the important roles that medical imaging procedures like Ultrasound scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) etc scans, serve in the diagnosis and treatment of sports related injuries.

Also, in advancing sophisticated research to better promote effective management and return to optimal performance of our active men and women engaging in various forms of physical activities either for recreational purposes or as professionals.

On this occasion of International day of Radiology 2019 (IDoR 2019), ARIN is happy to celebrate with the all medical professionals, members of the public and people engaging in sports related activities.

We celebrate with our other health professionals, Radiographers, Nurses, Physicist etc and most importantly, members of the public for this aspect of Medicine that had facilitated diagnostic medicine for centuries and therefore contribute to human development in general.

We also appreciate the work of our colleague Physicians, Surgeons and various professionals over the years and salute their timeless service to humanity.

We seize this opportunity to appeal to the Government and Institutions towards recognising sports related injuries as a potential health burden in our environment due to the increasing engagement of youths in sports in our fast growing population. There is therefore, increased demand in the use of Radiology in Sports Medicine.

We solicit through advocacy improved regulations and funding in all aspects of medical practice so as to bring our healthcare delivery system to international standards.

We hereby enjoin members of the public to ensure that they get the attention/endorsement of a Radiologist whenever they are to have any Radiological test e.g  Ultrasound, X-ray procedures, MRI, CT etc.

This will go a long way in reducing the activities of quacks, whose intentions are to exploit the unsuspecting patients. More so, activities of quacks and non-qualified personnel have caused various cases of misdiagnosis with the attendant negative effects on the health of the innocent patient.

HAPPY CELEBRATIONS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH AND GOD BLESS

Dr Jimoh Kamaldeen
